Blog Bedazzling

First of all, I completed NaBloPoMo this year! Yay! 30 days worth of posts.

Second, I’ve been looking more and more into themes and ideas for my new blog. And by new blog I mean I’m going to buy a domain and upgrade the blog I’m using right now. I just like calling it a new blog. Anyways, I went crazy downloading fonts the other night, and I’ve also been acquiring some new patterns and styles for Photoshop. Check out my background on Twitter for a peak at the color scheme and design aesthetic I have in mind for the blog!

I’m going to try and keep the daily posts going through December. I’m not sure if I’ll get every single day, but I’ll get most of them at least.

Refresher Course

I know I’ve gotten some new readers lately through NaNo, NaBlo, etc. Rather than make you dig around trying to figure things out, here’s a quick list of acronyms and secret agent code names you might encounter.

Best Friend

This one should be obvious. If you can’t figure this out, I’m not sure how you’re capable of using the internet. Best Friend is my best friend. Simple, right?

The Boy

Now an ex-boyfriend, he earned the title because he was the first male discussed on this blog. January-June.

Better BoyFriend. So named because he is not socially inept like someone else (see above). Current gentleman caller. June-Present Day. *cough*wassinglefortendays*cough*

Another person so dubbed because of their earlier involvement. An ex-boyfriend of Best Friend. November 2009-February?

Boy’s successor, and also now an ex of Best Friend. He looks like an elf. Seriously. Only now he thinks he’s Jesus. But he was an elf first. May-September/October?

National Novel Writing Month. I write 50,000 words each November, because I’m crazy. I’m shooting for 100,000 this year.

National Blog Posting Month. Also in November, making me even crazier. Yes, that means I write 50,000 words of a novel, and 30 blog posts in a month. Hurts so good.

Sticking My Feelers Out

I couldn’t resist having that as the title. I’ve been looking into blog networking more, and other resources. I really am excited to take my blog to the next level this summer.

Now, I’m still heavily addicted to Twitter and I think it’s a great resource. Thanks to NaBloPoMo I’ve been getting more readers this month, as I did last year. However, this year I’m trying to comment around on other blogs more, which seems to be helping, according to my stats. Apparently I’ve been saying things that interest at least one person.

I’ve also been looking into StumbleUpon after reading an older post on Five Blondes. I take Five Blondes pretty seriously when it comes to social media since the eldest blonde, Erica, is a guru when it comes to that. StumbleUpon is interesting but I’m not sure I quite understand it yet. Also, I don’t believe I can currently use it on my blog since I’m not self-hosted. users really are screwed when it comes to making their blogs fancier. Most services allow you to use Blogger, and TypePad but they only extend their program to users.

I also joined MyBlogLog after reading about it on I’m Blogging That. Yes, I’m going a bit crazy with the links right now. MyBlogLog is a blogging network where you have “Communities”. It’s kind of like the groups on NaBloPoMo. I’m still deciding what my opinion is on both StumbleUpon and MyBlogLog. But… I wasn’t a fan of Twitter when I first joined and look at me now. Things may change.

November So Far- Days 1 &2

Now, I can’t just post all those lovely character surveys. November is the month when I probably get the most readers due to NaNoWriMo and NaBloPoMo. Now that I’m on Twitter as well, hopefully I’ll get even more of my local SoBaNaNo’ers.

So far I’m actually well on track. Now, I’m no NaNo freak of nature who is already 40,000 words into their novel. But I’ve met the daily count the past two days, plus some. I’m at 4,119 words right now. This year is certainly different from last year. Being my first, I was totally pantsing it. I had a vague idea of where I wanted my novel to go, and made things up as I went. This year… I know my characters so well after loads of excessive backstory planning. Including making the blueprint for an entire high school, and writing up class schedules.

The plot however, I’m coming to realize, I do not have as well outlined. I know where the relationship between two of the main characters is going to go, and why. I know who they are but not what I’m going to do with them. I have major plot points planned (alliteration!) but what goes in between there is a definite gray area.

I think this weekend I’m going to end up doing some plot outlining so I can have more of a grip on things. I want to succeed this year. I need to succeed. This year is my story, and I want to tell it the right way.

Enough rambling. I’ll leave you all with a link. If you’re a WordPress blogger, you’ve probably seen this by now. It’s one of the top posts or whatever WordPress calls them. Anyways, this is mostly to bookmark it for myself, but if you want some blogging advice, check out this article!
Top 15 Blogging Best Practices

Bloggie Turns 1

Today is the 1 year anniversary/birthday of my blog. I’m trying to write some sort of deep, meaningful reflective post so bear with me.

I can certainly say that a lot has occurred since that mandatory introduction post I made on this day in 2009, back at Blogger. I took part in my first NaNoWriMo and NaBloPoMo. I won the first, and failed at the second. This year I’m coming back to the same spot, and attempting both challenges again. I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better at blogging regularly in the past couple months so hopefully I’ll win both this year. My plot for NaNo has more direction than last year, I think, when I pretty much pantsed my novel. I wrote what came to me, and generally my plot development had only been premeditated for a day or so max. This year I’ve had my idea brewing for a couple months. I’m a little hazy on my exact plot, but I really know my characters, and the world they live in. Furthermore, I know their emotions better because this year’s novel is based upon real life events. Only, you know, twisted to make them seem way cooler.

A year ago I was free of guy drama. Best Friend hadn’t even started dating Boy yet, and no one even knew that Elf existed.

It’s amazing how quickly relationships can change in such a seemingly short amount of time. A year ago TB and I were well on our way to becoming close friends, while I barely knew BBF. Now? TB and I have only had two short conversations in about 4 and a half months, while BBF and I are the ones that talk daily.

Next year?

I’ll have so much more to report on. New relationships, a new living situation…

Retrospective blog fail. I give up. I can’t be a Hallmark card for any longer.

Happy birthday, Blog. I would have made you a cake but you can’t eat. How about some cookies?

*awkward nerd humor*

Prompt Fest: Part I

I know I’ve been blogging about television way too much lately, so I’m going to be trying something different for the next couple days or so. The other day I wrote a response to a prompt from NaBloPoMo, and I really liked the idea, so I’m going to be responding to some more prompts until I get bored with them. I figure it’s a good way to get my creative juices going in time for NaNoWriMo.

You’ve just been given a million dollars. You are not allowed to keep it or give it to anyone you know personally. What do you do with it and why?

Can I be allowed to keep it in the bank for a bit so I can gain interest and have more to give out? To start with, I would probably give the largest chunk of this money to some sort of cancer research organization. I’ve seen too many relatives and people around me lose a family member to cancer. My maternal grandmother passed away in February 2008 to… I want to say cervical cancer after battling with it for the third time. Cancer is such a broad disease that affects millions without any cause, and in so many cases there is no true way to prevent it. With all the different variations of it in existence, I believe this is the primary disease we need to find a cure for.

After that… I’d probably give some to some sort of educational program for like…at risk kids from lower income families or something. Because kids are our future, yo.

And I can also definitely see myself donating to NaNoWriMo for being so awesome.

Conditioning for NaBloPoMo ’10

So, as I’ve said before, I’m trying to get warmed up for NaBloPoMo. I’m winning that AND NaNo this year. It’s on. I’ve been posting every day since the beginning of the month. Gotta get out of that blogging slump.
Blogging Conditioning Plan:
September- Post for first 10 days.
October- Post for first 15 days.
November- Post every day!

Where’s My Backpack?

This will probably be continued tomorrow at least, or this blog post will become longer than my NaNo novel.

Today I’m going to let you all in on a big part of my life.

No, I am not joking. Yes, I am a dork and a nerd and a freak. You haven’t figured that out by now? (Also, I didn’t get around to making a new banner for the blog this weekend. It was freezing cold by California standards and my numbness affected my creativity. Or something like that.)

The Beginning

Once upon a time, That Girl was a child that saw The Sims at various stores. She likes video games involving little people and occasional death (I was a beast at Oregon Trail). After much convincing, her father decides it will not scar her for life. Considering almost all of the expansions had been released at this point, that dates this back to around… Hold on while I check Wikipedia…2002 or 2003. That might not sound that long ago to some of you, but that was nearly half a lifetime ago for me.

That Girl liked The Sims. She liked it even more after she discovered cheats and figured out how to keep her sims from peeing on the floor. She accumulated a complete collection of the original game.

v. 2

At first, That Girl was slightly scared of The Sims 2. She was used to her old, pixely friends. But, after playing at a friend’s house, she discovered that the new version would not bring death and evil to our planet.

Welcome to the Age of Enlightenment, folks.

Specifically, she liked the story telling aspect of the game. While this had been in the original game, it was way more awesome. This was like all the little stories she had acted out with her Polly Pockets growing up, only bigger and better. And without clothes that tear.

Sadly, I don’t think I can say I would be where I am now if it wasn’t for this game. All will be revealed as we continue following this evolution, my cro-Magnon friends.

She began many stories that were never published, or were only just begun. It was through this process that she became better introduced to another magical piece of software.

Alright, Sims is not solely responsible for this. My dad is a graphic designer. I’ve grown up with my friends Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I remember being in 5th grade and using the clone brush to give a picture of my hamster a dozen feet.

But Sims gave me a more practical use for Photoshop, and encouraged me to expand my knowledge of it. It started with just using the program to make cooler looking covers. I’m not going to dig any of these up for you, as they are scary, and I care too much about my readers to do that.

This led to my Photobucket. It is now 34 pages and 678 images large. The first image, a masterpiece avatar dates back to… Wait. It’s not dated. Um… Let’s approximate this to… 2003 or 2004.

By this point, I’d joined my very first Sims related forum- The Sims 2 Writer’s Hangout. AKA the Hangout for short. This led to pictures like:

It brought the age of my involvement in contests. This was followed up by my first major serious sims story. I mean serious because it was a much larger production than the past stories had been.

Around this time I also began dabbling in “skinning” or the creation of clothes, hair, etc. for sims and building a forum which I promptly abandoned. I don’t even remember starting it, honestly. Maybe I never opened it… The only proof is the banners and things in my photobucket.

We’re beginning to reach the era when my skinning, photoshopping, and sim creating skills really took off. We had Emma, who entered the third Top Model at the Hangout. This one was for teen sims. I’ll leave you with some pictures of her and some clothing creations.

If You Are Chilly

If I talk honestly about today, it’s going to turn into a rant. Let’s just say I became incredibly frustrated with the woman who claims to be my mother today. It’s cooled off but if I start talking about it I’ll get all worked up again.

Confession: I love to read webcomics. Last night I found a new one that I’ve been reading obsessively in attempt to catch back up. There’s something amazing about finding a new comic that’s been around for a couple years or at least months. I love getting to just read right through pages. Yes, the suspension when it becomes…live again is fun but it’s also nice to not have to wait.

I’m sure I’ll end up sharing some of my favorites again later. The comic I’ve been talking about is: [Wordpress doesn’t seem to want me to insert the link.]

Into the Velvet Sky

The majority of the time I don’t know what I’m going to write about before I start blogging for the day. Today is one of those days. Even though I got plenty of sleep I still ended up being sleepy. And I’ve got a killer headache right now.

So,  today we’re going to have some positive thinking and imagination time!

UC Irvine and University of Washington, the two schools tied for my number one spot. They’re really different. But… I’d be so happy to be at either one of them. Fingers crossed. After living in the same house since birth, I’m so ready to be anywhere but here. I’m not even going to apply to the college in my town (Mom and Uncle went there). I think even if I don’t get into any colleges next year I would still move and go to community college and live somewhere else on my own. My parents aren’t that bad. But… I need a change.
